Kaila Hoppe ’10
Theater and Dance

A collection of historical garments owned by the Department of Theater and Dance inspired Kaila Hoppe ’10, to explore the changing fashions of the 1920s for her senior research project. Her research into the fabric, shape, and construction of the pieces culminated with the production of a research book that catalogs the fashions of the decade. She also created a public exhibit outside the Hatlen Theater featuring several of the dresses, costume designs for the play “Hay Fever” by Noel Coward, and pages from her book. The result was a colorful display that highlighted the intricate hand beading and careful stitching on historical dresses that most people don’t get the chance to see. Kaila will be building on the classroom and research experiences she had at UC Santa Barbara as she continues to graduate school for costume design in the fall.
